A pony is a small horse, often stocky in its build. The word "pony" is derived from the French word poulenet, meaning "young horse." Typically, a horse is considered to be a pony if it is less than 14.2 hands, or 58 inches, high at the ridge of the shoulder blade, called the withers.
The pony's small size is due in part to the harsh environments its wild ancestors inhabited. After domestication, ponies were given many jobs. They are used for riding, pulling carts or wagons, and in competitions. Historically, their small size allowed them to be used in mines and other cramped spaces. Sometimes, ponies were the preferred mounts for children, especially of the rich.

Horses and ponies have been subjects of art since the Stone Age. Cave paintings depict the animal, and it has been included throughout history in scenes of warfare, recreation, and sport. While the use of the horse in art may have declined because it is no longer an integral part of the culture of industrialized nations - it has been replaced by the motor vehicle - ponies still hold their own in children's literature and animation. For example, the My Little Pony franchise has been delighting children with toys, television series, and animated films since 1981.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Pony
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This will form the pony's head.
2. Outline the pony's body using a series of curved lines. From the circle, outline the brow and snout. Enclose the body using a long curved line, extending from the back of the head to the snout.
3. Outline the legs. Draw two sets of long, curved lines extending downward from the body. Extend one more line, outlining the far front leg.
4. Erase the guide lines from the head and legs.
5. Give the pony a face. Draw a curved line to indicate the near ear; within the ear, draw an oval to form the inner portion of the ear. Enclose the far ear using a curved line. Draw a small oval within an oval to form the eye; shade the inner oval, indicating the pupil. Draw a curved line across the snout to differentiate the pony's nose. Draw the nostril using a small circle, and a pair of curved lines for the smile.
6. Draw hooves at the end of the feet. Enclose each leg using a curved line. Draw another curve across the leg, indicating the top of the hoof. Draw the split of the hoof using a short, curved line.
7. Draw the pony's mane and tail. Extend a pair of curved lines forward from the ear, crossing the face. The lines should meet in a point. Extend another set of lines from the ear, towards the back and down the neck. Finally, draw a third set of lines to form the tail.
8. Erase the guide lines from the mane and ears.
9. Detail the mane and tail with the texture of hair. Extend long, curved lines down the length of the mane and tail.
10. Color your pony. Will he be a paint, an appaloosa, or a dappled grey? The choice is yours. Don't forget to check out our other horse and pony drawing tutorials.
